Wild West Feels in Deadwood
While on our way back east to visit family, we stopped at our actual home in South Dakota for a couple days. We met up with some friends and spent the day in Deadwood where Kool Deadwood Nights and concerts were being held. It's a 20 minute drive from Sturgis, where the huge motorcycle rally is held each year. We arrived a week after the rally.
Deadwood is a fun town with a blend of Wild West history, restaurants, and too many casinos! Since parking is difficult in this small town, we decided to take a free shuttle bus from Black Hills Cabin Rentals. The drop-off was at the Welcome Center which was right next to one of the main lots for the car show. There were all sorts of classic cars from the 1970's and earlier being shown off by people from all over. In addition to these main show lots, newer and unique cars parked throughout the town.
Much of the town’s main streets were closed down for concerts. People had foldup chairs setup to create their own stadium style seating. It was crowded but flowed well enough and we didn't have to wait much in stores or for food. Some of the sites we passed were the Saloon where Wild Bill was shot, where his assassin Jack McCall was captured, and the original location of Al Swearengen's Cricket Saloon! This town also has a TV show based on it aptly called "Deadwood" and it is worth checking out if you haven't seen it!
We ate at Jacobs Brewhouse restaurant which has our favorite kind of American Pub vibe. It has a rustic feel with guitars hanging on the walls. Here we caught up with our friends Dani and Lance.
After food, we wandered along the streets while jamming out to familiar classics from the Aerosmith and ABBA cover bands! There are plenty of shops along the strip to checkout for souvenirs and trinkets or casinos to stop into and try your luck. Though kitchsy, Deadwood is a fun town to visit for it's history and atmosphere.
