Hornindalsrokken and Glacier Lakes

Hornindalsrokken from Hornindal Bridge

We were inspired to find this horned peak hike after seeing it from the top of Mt. Hoven while in Loen. We hiked the Blåvatnet Lake trail to reach the base of the peak and then continued on beyond to reach Tyssevatnet Lake.

To get to this trailhead, drive to route 60 towards the Hornindal Bridge and enter the rest area next to it (free WCs here). There is a 50kr toll road leading leads to another lot just before the trailhead which we took to cut back on the walk. It is about a mile from the rest area to the trailhead. The trail to the lake is 3.3km or 2 miles one way. It starts off steep then levels off to a huge area where we lost the trail and made our own way to the lake. We later found that we had missed the signs pointing to the lake and mountain and going right from there will keep you on a groomed trail.

It took us an hour and a half to reach the lake where we stopped to eat and enjoy the water and that rocky peak beyond it. Since we didn't plan to hike to the top of the mountain, we decided to continue on past the lake and up to Tyssevatnet Lake. There's stream on the way that we had to rock-hop across then up a ridge to get there. On the way there is a nice view of a glacier in the mountain!

Eventually it opens up to a beautiful fjord view of Tyssevatnet Lake. We passed a few hikers early on in the hike but at this point we had the whole area to ourselves, appreciating the serenity of where we were.

Following the correct trail back cut off a half hour from our hike. Including losing the path, lunch break, having to cross a deep stream, and adding extra to the hike for the fjord it took us just over five hours round trip. The view from the trailhead looking back was also beautiful. Grassy roofed cabins and a prominent round peak in the distance give you a feel of what rural Norway is like.
