Two Lofoten Hikes in a Day
Nonstinden was our first hike of the day located just off the road in the town of Ballstad. We began the climb around noon and decided to take the alternate trail up. This section started off with a chain letting us know it may be a bit challenging.
The high winds that day added tot he challenge and there were a few airy parts where we had to stay low and focus on the ground in front of us to get through it! There is a huge open area about midway up where we were being swayed by the intense winds.
The hike continues up this area and the grade increases as you approach the peak. Here you can see the mountains beyond and coast below. The trail continues on to other peaks but we decided to complete the loop for Nonstinden. We took the other way down which was less airy but steep enough to slow us down a bit. Overall this was an average Lofoten Hike. You will get some nice views but it felt like it took forever crossing the open area in the middle! In the end it took us only two hours round trip.
Our second hike of the day was up Stornappstinden. We began the trail from a lot just below the parking area as the closer one was packed with tents with campers. There were plenty of spots to setup in the grass which could have opened up parking for day hikers. The hike begins by passing a small ski building and continues up towards the peak that looks like it is where you should be going! It was still windy and rain came and went throughout. The trail had muddy and steep parts.
Just like with many trails in Norway we ran into some sheep along the way!
Stornappstinden was a challenge both mentally and physically. The trail goes up and up, not letting up much at all until you reach a slight decrease in grade after reaching the ridge leading to the summit. It got colder, windier, and rainier as we approached the peak. We persevered and made it just before the clouds fully impaired our views of Offerskallen, Hauklandstranda Beach, and Mannen.
This hike took us about 4 hours and caused us to push our limits but we made it! This was one of the most rewarding hikes we have done and one of our favorite hikes in Lofoten.
